Carbon dioxide is just as important for our health as Oxygen and perhaps even more important, because it has to be sufficiently on board in the body before Oxygen will be available. Contrary to what most of us have learned, we exhale to regulate the amount of Carbon Dioxide that is left in our bodies, not to get rid of all our CO2. Most of us breathe too fast and blow off too much carbon dioxide too quickly much of the time. The consequence of this is we end up short of oxygen. The harder we try to breathe to get more oxygen, we actually become more and more oxygen deficient. We become saturated with unavailable oxygen.
What is over-breathing or hyperventilation? Hyperventilation MEANS THAT YOU ARE BLOWING OUT CO2 TOO QUICKLY. It is the extreme chest heaving we might see in very traumatic situations but it is also the person very passively showing no visible signs of breathing poorly. It is a way of life for many. It is simply the excessive exhalation of C02 at a given moment or over time.
How would you know if you are over-breathing? You can only know by measuring C02 level through the use of a capnograph which measures the amount of C02 in your exhalation or end-tidal C02. Is there anyway a lay person can use one of these machines to measure end-tidal C02? Yes, it is possible with the use of a lay-machine that you can connect to your computer. It is possible to measure yourself all day long while working on a project, listening to a lecture, while sleeping, wherever you would feel comfortable doing this. The feedback would be incredible and comparable to a 24 hour heart or blood pressure monitor. This information will tell you what your body is doing breath by breath. This may also explain your many symptoms and offer incredible feedback to analyze and recognize your patterns.
Until you know your C02 level you will not know if you are breathing correctly. Most people are hyperventilating or over-breathing and don?t know it. You have to measure your exhalation to know if you are over-breathing. There is no other way to know.
